High Performance Centers of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft bundle the research activities of Fraunhofer institutes at locations that do outstanding research on a topic. Since December 2016, the Fraunhofer Performance Center for "Security and Data Protection in the Digital World" in Darmstadt has combined the expertise of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD in the area of cybersecurity.
The Fraunhofer High Performance Center was supported by the State of Hesse as part of CRISP (Center for Research in Security and Privacy) at the time, which was renamed the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE at the end of 2019, and with central funding from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The center is managed in partnership by Prof. Michael Waidner, head of Fraunhofer SIT, and Prof. Dieter W. Fellner, head of Fraunhofer IGD. The High Performance Center conducts application-oriented research and networks with international science, well-known companies from business and politics. The core of the activities is the development of new solutions for cybersecurity. These are security components and methods, tools and processes for the design and implementation of secure IT-based solutions. The areas of the High Performance Center are infrastructure security, software security and system security. In these areas, scientists are researching components, methods, tools and processes that improve IT security and data protection in real IT-based systems.
