The High Performance Center at Fraunhofer Society bundles research activities of Fraunhofer Institutes at locations that carry out outstanding research in one topic. The High Performance Center Security and Privacy in the Digital World in Darmstadt combines the competencies of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD) in cybersecurity. Therefore, Darmstadt is now the only location that covers the entire range of IT security and data protection.
The center is responsible for application-oriented research and is linked to international science, well-known companies from the business world and politics. At the core of the activities is the development of new solutions for cybersecurity. These include security components, as well as methods, tools and processes for the design and realization of secure IT-based solutions. The center’s work areas comprise "infrastructure security", "soft security" and "system security". In these areas, the scientists are exploring and developing components, methods, tools and processes that improve IT security and data protection for real IT-based systems.
An example for the networking of science, business and politics is the Hessian-Israeli Partnership Accelerator (HIPA), which is to be launched in 2017. Within the scope of this Accelerator, highly qualified students and young entrepreneurs from Israel and Germany will be able to develop solutions to practical cyber security issues of companies under the supervision of Fraunhofer employees. The Accelerator is intended to consolidate cooperation between Germany and Israel, accelerate innovative development approaches and promote entrepreneurial thinking.
The High Performance Center is supported by the State of Hesse within the scope of CRISP and by funds from the Fraunhofer Society. The center is managed in partnership by Prof. Michael Waidner, the head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT), and Prof. Dieter W. Fellner, the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD.
