Dr. Susanne Wasum-Rainer took this office in September 2018. After having worked from 1983 to 1986 at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, SWP, she joined the Federal Foreign Service in 1986. She served as Counsellor at the United Nations Department in Bonn from 1986 to 1988. She then served at the German Embassy to Morocco as Head of Consular Division and then at the German Embassy to Israel as Head of the Cultural Division. In 1997 she was appointed Deputy Head of Political Department at the Permanent Representation of Germany to the Office of the United Nations in Geneva.
Starting from 2002 she held various important positions at the Legal Department of the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, such as Deputy Director General for Legal Affairs, as Director General for legal Affairs, as well as Legal Advisor of the German Government.
She was German Ambassador to France from 2012 to 2015 and from 2015 to 2018 German Ambassador to the Italian Republic.
She graduated in 1983 at the University of Mainz, holds a PhD of the University of Passau and completed parts of her practical formation as trainee lawyer in Jerusalem.
